SPORE PROJECTS- transient gallery & collaboration lab.
Based out of St Louis Missouri, Spore Projects is a transient DIY exhibition space, archive & media lab as creative practice, propelling innovative interactive collaborations between individuals & participating groups in an evolving cultural exchange.
COMPONENTS:
Exhibitions & Events: The vehicle/mobile gallery serves as both an exhibition center and community arts project lab engaging host communities in a variety of ways including two galleries (one external), music/sound installations, film series, collaborative events, performances and open lecture forums. The mobility of Spore Projects allows for a type of exchange that doesn’t occur in stationary spaces. Locally this will allow for diverse ideas, information and collaborations to span across neighborhood and cultural divides. Regionally it will become a traveling epicenter rooted in community arts. Connecting diverse people, cities, and ideas through a growing network.
Archive: Considered the most vital component of the project. All collaborations, events, performances and exhibitions will be archived for future distribution in the form of a tangible publication with media elements including film, field recordings and interviews.
Media: Though the use of an interactive website and the utilization of free media sharing tools such as YouTube, Facebook, Myspace and Blogspot, Spore collaborations remain easily accessible to the public. Becoming part of an expanding constellation of free information.
Artist Residency: Spore will periodically host a visiting artist/s to create an exhibition or event. Artists will be expected to actively engage with the host city (St Louis) as well as Spore members and develop their project based on the exchange. Residents will be encouraged to share previous work with the community as well as consent to participation in both the public and documentary archive.
UPDATE: The Spore Projects blog will be up and running in just a few days. Website to follow and several grants in the works. Looking to purchase a truck in the next month and will be on the road in September.

SKYDIVE!!!!!
The Chautauqua Art Lab began last night at Fort Gondo. Keith Sawyer lectured from his book Collective Genius, Rich O'Donnell brought out his newest gadget- drum machine gloves and foot pad, Daniel Shown shared his sound and video mixing. I did a little folk/noise performance with organic instruments and distorted vocals. Bill McCormick shared his folk instruments including a saw drum pad he constructed from found objects. Then Ghost Ice and Adam both with electronic instruments and Eric Steins on the digital sax joined in a collaborative jam session with just about everyone present.
Spending much of the day researching artist projects and programs while writing about the residency I'm hoping to create. Today I found Incubate and Skydive both with similar concepts to what I'm considering doing. Wanting to take some of these ideas and create something that is less intellectualized in order to be accessible to more people while at the same time create dialogue with intellectuals. I think its going to be a difficult process.
Skydive Projects in Houston.
Utilizing an open collective model, Skydive hosts boundary pushing artists for their 12' 14" space located inside an apartment building in Houston Texas. Skydive is a team of artists, curators, and visionaries with the focus of interacting with between guest artists and the Houston community.
In conjunction with artist projects Skydive also hosts a Saturday free school and connects with green projects in the immediate area including a recent construction of a straw bale artist residency center in west Texas.

Incubate
Located in Chicago, Incubate considers itself a research institution that is challenging current art infrastructures in how they affect artistic production. They do not have a 501c3 and are attempting to work outside of that structure. Though exploration they are developing alternative financial models for contemporary art institutions and collective or individual artist projects working outside of institutions. They are exploring financial models outside of external market looking for new methods that are more relevant to both art and the everyday. The goal is to continue to conceptualize new possibilities, document and share findings. Connect to Incubate
Incubate facilitates conversations, exhibitions, and symposiums regarding creative urban and community planning with an emphasis self-sustaining situations for art production. Including the investigating of current practices in public/private sponsorships for arts organizations. Incubate also hosts a collaborative residency program where the guest artist executes a creative project in conjunction with Incubate members.
Presently though the use of open source software MediaWiki. InCUBATE plans to create a wiki that will function to collect information for projects, collect historical and contemporary data about discursive art making, as well as information directed by the wiki users.

Collaborative Residencies and Art Spaces
"Spoke is a small collaborative enterprise interested in maintaining a spirit of resourcefulness, spontaneity, experimentation, access rather than exclusion, and interaction. We are dedicated to providing opportunities for creative individuals and groups to produce unique and innovative projects, events, performances, workshops, exhibitions and creative endeavors of all kinds." -Spoke www.spokechicago.blogspot.com.
Very inspired by Spoke as well as their booth at Version. I have been talking to several artists and organizations about starting a similar space in St Louis that would incorporate documentation, an artist residency for collaboration/community with the existing art scene and neighborhood as well as a gallery focusing on challenging work relevant to issues in St Louis. I think a space like this compliments the spirit of collaboration already existing in St Louis, specifically Cherokee St. In May I will be hosting the first visiting artist in my apartment. In upcoming months I hope to obtain a building to house the project. Thanks to everyone for your support so far! If anyone is interested please contact me.
Other inspiring projects- Salt Residency in Maine, Women's Studio Workshops- New York State, and Just Seeds
